Hidalgo County tax protests are heard by the Hidalgo County Appraisal Review Board (ARB). Although they accept payments from Hidalgo County Appraisal District (CAD), they identify themselves as distinct entities from the Hidalgo CAD. About $3 billion in property values were reduced in 2022 as a consequence of informal and ARB hearings combined, with about $33 million in tax savings coming from ARB tax protest hearings. There were 2,095 ARB hearings before the Hidalgo County ARB in 2022.

ARB protests generate large savings in Hidalgo County, totaling $33 million in 2022, based on value reduction at the ARB of $1 billion. In all, the owner saved money on taxes as a result of 77% of ARB protests. Homeowners won 84% of their ARB protests while commercial and business personal property owners won 67%.
